Espionage Thriller
Mitch Rapp Books in Order
by Vince Flynn
CIA counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp hunts terrorists without mercy and without apology — one of the most viscerally satisfying action thriller series ever written. Created by Vince Flynn and continued by Kyle Mills and Don Bentley.
About the series
The Mitch Rapp series, created by Vince Flynn, stars one of thriller fiction's most iconic characters: a CIA counterterrorism operative who operates in the shadows of Washington, hunting terrorists without the constraints that bind conventional agents. Flynn launched the series in 1999 with Transfer of Power and wrote thirteen books before his death in 2013. Kyle Mills took over the series beginning with The Survivor (2015) and carried it through fourteen more entries; Don Bentley contributed the 2024–2025 prequel novels Capture or Kill and Denied Access.
Recommended reading order
Publication order is the recommended way to read Mitch Rapp — you meet the character as a fully formed operative and later American Assassin (2010) functions as a powerful origin story precisely because you already know and respect him. The chronological order (starting with American Assassin then Kill Shot before returning to Transfer of Power) is an alternative for new readers who want context first, though most fans consider it inferior. Note that Term Limits (1997), Flynn's debut novel, features supporting characters from the Rapp universe and is worth reading as a companion piece.
