High Fantasy
The Lord of the Rings Books in Order
by J.R.R. Tolkien
Tolkien's seminal trilogy follows a fellowship's quest to destroy the One Ring and end the dark lord Sauron's reign over Middle-earth.
About the series
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is the foundational text of modern epic fantasy. Originally written as a single novel and published in three volumes for practical reasons, it follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins and a Fellowship of nine companions on a journey to destroy the One Ring and end the threat of the dark lord Sauron over Middle-earth.
Recommended reading order
Most readers begin with The Hobbit as a gentle introduction to Middle-earth and Bilbo's discovery of the Ring, then proceed through the three-volume Lord of the Rings. The Silmarillion (1977) is a deeper mythological history of Middle-earth and is best saved for after the main story, when its scope and density will feel rewarding rather than daunting.
