Crime Thriller
Jesse Stone Books in Order
by Robert B. Parker
Alcoholic ex-LAPD detective Jesse Stone rebuilds his life as chief of police in Paradise, Massachusetts, where trouble follows him anyway. Robert B. Parker's most introspective hero, continued by Michael Brandman and then Reed Farrel Coleman.
About the series
Robert B. Parker created Jesse Stone, an alcoholic ex-LAPD detective who retreats to the small Massachusetts town of Paradise after losing his job and his marriage, only to find that Paradise is full of corruption, crime, and characters as complicated as he is. The series is quieter and more introspective than Parker's Spenser novels, leaning into Stone's personal demons as much as his casework. Parker wrote the first nine entries; after his death in 2010, Michael Brandman took over for three books (Killing the Blues, Fool Me Twice, Damned If You Do), and Reed Farrel Coleman has continued the series from Blind Spot (2014) onward. Tom Selleck's CBS TV movies brought Stone to a wide audience.

Begin with Night Passage (1997) to see how Stone arrives in Paradise and establishes himself as chief — the character's slow recovery from alcoholism and his tortured relationship with his ex-wife Jenn are ongoing threads best followed from the start. The Brandman and Coleman entries maintain continuity with Parker's world while each author adds their own voice.
