Action Adventure
Clive Cussler (Dirk Pitt) Books in Order
by Clive Cussler / Dirk Cussler
Dirk Pitt is NUMA's swashbuckling special projects director — part adventurer, part action hero, entirely unstoppable. Clive Cussler's flagship series set the template for the modern adventure thriller, mixing high-seas action with historical mystery and globe-spanning intrigue across more than five decades.
About the series
Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt series is the gold standard of high-seas adventure fiction. Pitt is a dashing, wisecracking special projects director for NUMA (the National Underwater and Marine Agency) who repeatedly saves the world through a combination of fearlessness, physical prowess, and an encyclopedic knowledge of historical mysteries and shipwrecks. The series spans over fifty years, beginning with The Mediterranean Caper (1973). From Black Wind (2004) onward, the books were co-written with Cussler's son Dirk Cussler, who now carries the series forward following Clive Cussler's death in 2020.
Recommended reading order
Publication order is the natural path, starting with The Mediterranean Caper — though note that Pacific Vortex (published 1983) is chronologically the first story and was written earlier. Most readers begin with Raise the Titanic! or Sahara, the two most famous early entries. From Black Wind (2004) onward, all entries are co-authored with Dirk Cussler.
