Ann Cleeves is one of Britain's most beloved crime writers, best known for two series that became landmark television dramas: Vera (starring Brenda Blethyn) and Shetland (starring Douglas Henshall). Her novels are atmospheric, character-driven mysteries rooted in the landscape and communities of northern England and the Scottish islands. Over a career spanning four decades, she has also written the Inspector Ramsay series set in Northumberland and the Two Rivers series featuring DI Matthew Venn in North Devon.
Recommended reading order
Each series stands on its own and can be started independently. The most popular entry points are Raven Black (Shetland, 2006) and The Crow Trap (Vera, 1999). For the Two Rivers series, begin with The Long Call (2019). Within each series, publication order is recommended as character relationships develop over time.
