Cozy Mystery
Agatha Raisin Books in Order
by M.C. Beaton (continued by R.W. Green)
Retired London PR exec Agatha Raisin moves to the Cotswolds expecting a quiet life — and instead becomes an accidental amateur detective with a talent for stumbling into murder. M.C. Beaton's beloved cozy series blends sharp wit, village charm, and genuine suspense across nearly 40 novels.
About the series
M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin series follows a sharp-tongued, insecure ex-PR executive who retires from London to the Cotswolds village of Carsely — only to find herself repeatedly embroiled in murder investigations. The books are classic cozy mysteries: witty, fast-moving, and anchored by an irreverent protagonist whose vanity and romanticism are as endearing as they are disastrous. After M.C. Beaton's death in 2019, the series was continued by R.W. Green with the full blessing of the Beaton estate, beginning with Down the Hatch (2021).
Recommended reading order
Begin with The Quiche of Death (1992) and read in publication order. While each mystery is self-contained, Agatha's ongoing personal life — her on-again, off-again relationship with neighbor James Lacey, her friendships in the village — runs through the full series and rewards readers who start from the beginning.
